Even super professional athletes can play like 15-year-old-students. The reason for that is an internal stress, which can make even outstanding players flop. The same thing happens in business. While having crucial moments at the job, even experienced employers can stress out.

We can borrow methods to overcome this phenomenon from sport psychology, as sport psychology is rich with the methods of improving daily mental performance in order to improve physical performance.
Two causes of flop
Sports psychologists have found two immobilizing causes: explicit monitoring and stereotype threat. Both of them obstruct our mental performance, but in diverse ways.
Explicit monitoring means paying too much attention to things that should be automatic. Both in sport and in business life it is important to break the entire process into small pieces, and lead these peaces down to automatism. As soon as it is done, it is vital to forget this method.
It is the explicit monitoring that takes up the working memory which is vital to performance. For instance, if your working memory is full of details (body language, hole in the suit etc) during the business presentation, you won’t be flexible to answer unexpected questions. So, try to abstract away from tiny insignificant details in order to succeed.
Another cause is self-confidence. We all feel that inside ourselves we have some part of our identity which is inadequate. In case if we start thinking about that, we start performing not as good as usual. The good example for demonstrating this phenomenon: when European male engineers do well on tasks with the people of the same race, but if they are told they would be competing with Asian engineers, they absolutely flop on the same tasks.

There are few steps that can help you overcome these psychological threats.
1. Relax
Try to relax before an important presentation or tasks. Studies on athletes have shown that those who made relaxing exercise at least during 10 minutes prior to the game scored much better than those who did not.
2. Believe
Be self-confident, as your recognition of self-confidence is infectious and spreads on people around. And everyone would like to be around it. It is important to believe in self-worth: walk into the room with the individuality you are most proud of and you will definitely succeed.
3. Distract
Try to distract from important task, it is the only way to overcome explicit monitoring. It could be singing, praying, playing with small thing in hands.
