So you are dreaming to get that job you’ve always wanted? But you haven’t been promoted to it yet. Well, there are several things to consider before accepting any job offer. If you want promotion and career development you need a workplace that will allow you to grow as a professional and also climb up the career ladder.
So if you are already working in a company think about the career development it offers. Is there room for development? Is there much competition? What is required to get to the next level?
Obviously the better worker you are the faster you’ll be promoted given that your company is developing creating new higher and more promising positions. But what does it mean being a better worker? Well, skills, knowledge and resourcefulness are the things you should accumulate and know how to apply them in your area of work. Always keep your finger on the pulse in the area you work in. It will make you more competent in your field which in turn will help your future promotion.
Be a professional. Keep your personal feelings and relationships at home. Leave all the emotional baggage at the door of your company’s building. The better your work ethic the more likely you will be promoted. Social communication at work is as important as in any field though it should not be as personal as outside the company. Why? Because the more feelings involved into your work relations the harder it is to work.
If you want to please everyone or someone has a grudge against you well, then it will be hard for you to make objective decisions and act as necessary first of all for your thing and not relations. That’s why it’s a bad idea to work with your girlfriend or love interest.
Set a goal. So you want that promotion. Learn what you should do to get one. Make sure you deliver great work and show your employers you can deliver more and complete more difficult and responsible tasks. Analyze what strengths you have that brought you to the position you’re in now. Rear your strengths and correct your weaknesses.
Apply for a job. The moment you found out about a new position in the company apply for it. Of course, you should be sure you can handle it, but don’t be afraid to take a small risk.
If you lack skills to get your dream job or position go to school, study and learn yourself, find a role-model or mentor that would give you a good advice or teach you a lesson. But at the same time don’t be afraid to rear a successor that will be able to fill in for you while you are enjoying your new promotion.
Know your competitors’ strengths and weaknesses as it will help you fill in your own blank spots and become better by the day. Don’t be afraid to let your employers know that you want and can handle promotion to a new more challenging position. You can even try performing tasks from the next level to demonstrate that you can do the job. Promotion is a matter of development and self-confidence.
