Despite undergoing a sex change, a British man was able to become a first male-mother in UK. According to the Beaumont Society transgender support group the man, who is currently around thirty years old, gave birth to his child the last year. He approached asking for an advice about having a baby.
Joanna Darrel, representative of the Beaumont Society, said:
The society, all it does is provide information and acts as an information hub for people to find data about specific things, and we are able to refer them to more specialist organizations.”
She added:
We sometimes get people coming back to say thanks for our help. He got back in touch and said he had had the baby.”
So, Darrell directed Thomas to the Gender Identity Research and Education Society- a charity organization that educate in the sphere of gender identity and intersex issues in order to improve the lives of people involved in these issues.
Joanna said:
This is probably unique, in the two years that I have been a member of the society this is the only one that I have been able to refer on.”
In theory it is possible for the man with a sex change give birth to a child if he still have his ovaries and uterus functioning. The man probably went through the hormone treatment in order to reactive his womb that apparently was not removed during the operation on sex change. It is believed that the baby has been delivered by means of the caesarean section.
Darrell stated during the interview to The Sunday Times that this transgender man is the first one to give birth in UK:
As far as we know there is only him.
This man probably decided to follow the footsteps of the first transgender mother- American Thomas Beatie. Beatie, 38, who was born a woman Tracy Lagondino, lives in Arizona with his wife Nancy. He gave birth to his first child in 2007 and since then has given birth to three children: Susan, Austin and Jensen.
In order to obtain male features, Thomas started having testosterone injections when he was around twenty, which lowered his voice, added some facial hair and changed his reproductive organs. In 2002 Thomas went through the breasts removing surgery and became a man legally, but still kept his reproductive organs such as vagina, uterus and others as Nancy had a hysterectomy.
Before conceiving baby Thomas stopped taking testosterone and purchased sperm of an anonymous donor. Thomas gave the birth by the natural way. Scott Moore from California, USA and Yuval Topper from Israel are other transgender men who gave birth to their children in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
