Man to Man Advice: Tom Ford on Style and Manners

A fashion designer, film director and style icon Tom Ford has covered AnOther magazine spring/summer 2011 issue, has posed for Jeff Burton and given an interview to Jefferson Hack. Tom Ford shares his views on a modern gentleman listing five rules or lessons from which everyone can learn how to behave.

You should put on the best version of yourself when you go out in the world because that is a show of respect to the other people around you.

Well, I’d clarify that not to the extent when you become artificial and insincere. People don’t like rudeness, but if you try too hard to seem nice to literally everyone you just seem false and lose your personality. Anyway, you can’t please everyone, but it doesn’t mean you have to be rude.

A gentleman today has to work. People who do not work are so boring and are usually bored. You have to be passionate, you have to be engaged and you have to be contributing to the world.

I like this being not about money and success. It’s about having your thing that you do, that you are passionate about. We all have talents, but the 90 percent of the talent is your own hard work. So finding something you are passionate about will not only keep you busy, help you realize yourself and bring money but also will draw others to you.

Manners are very important and actually knowing when things are appropriate. I always open doors for women, I carry their coat, I make sure that they’re walking on the inside of the street. Stand up when people arrive at and leave the dinner table.

Classic. How many men do all these things these days? I mean it’s just right.

Don’t be pretentious or racist or sexist or judge people by their background.

Idealistic? Maybe, but don’t we have more important things to do rather than hate ‘those’ that differ from ‘us’.

A man should never wear shorts in the city. Flip-flops and shorts in the city are never appropriate. Shorts should only be worn on the tennis court or on the beach.

Shorts and flip-flops are too casual and relaxed to sport in the city especially if you want to look stylish and make such an impression.

I really enjoyed reading these lessons because they are right and true and if you want to become better these are the principles to live by.

Other style rules by Tom Ford:

  • Classic simplicity always works. Classic shape suits give a man strong shoulders, a fitted waist, and long legs.
  • When it comes to patterns, don’t plan too carefully just throw them all together.
  • Short suit jackets make a man look like a female flight attendant from the back, not sexy.
  • Jewelry should be small and simple.
  • Don’t overuse Botox.
  • Get used going through the day in a suit.
  • Grooming: keep earwax, skin flakes and stray hairs in check.

The style essentials in a man’s wardrobe according to Tom Ford:

  • Jeans
  • Perfect tuxedo
  • Dark suit
  • Shoes
  • Tie
  • Beautiful watch
