The main goal of this article is giving you the simple clues on the dressing rules that are able to prep up your image without significant cost. Usually, the insignificant mistake in the outfit can ruin the whole impression. I am not going to write about the obvious style mistakes that are widely-known such as the poorly fitted clothes, stains, massy clothing.
Common men’s style mistakes
If we follow the logics, buttons are on your shirts and jackets for the reason and their amount implies how many should be buttoned up. And, apparently, the majority of men follow their logics. Clothing like casual polo and trousers, with the exception of shirts, require leaving at least one button undone.
Suit jackets and blazers are the number one offenders, though cardigans and waistcoats also fall in this category. Unfortunately I have to confess that misbutonning today is the general mistake, which should be eradicated.
There is no one general rule on buttoning- it is only the widely spread and accepted manner. The sure solution is leaving the bottom button of the piece of clothing you have on undone. In case with the two-button jacket, you button up only the upper button, while with the three-button garments you should fasten the middle or top two buttons.
If you are opting for the four-button garment, then you should leave only the lower button undone. For the jackets with the amount of buttons that exceed 5, there couldn’t be a common style advice, decided it yourself based on your own taste and sense of style.
The same method of leaving the bottom undone works with waistcoats and cardigans. But the real difficulties come in wearing the double-breasted attire. In this case the both ways are ok: either fastening the bottom buttons or leave them undone.
And the essential rule is unfastening your blazer before sitting down in order to avoid flattering and sloppiness of jacket.
We all know that today the essential is in details and accessories rather than in clothes itself. While the accessories like pocket squares, ties and jewelry widely spread by men lately, socks in turn are often been ignored.
In contrast to the issues with buttons, there are some general rules concerning wearing socks.
- White gym socks are intended for gym only.
- If you see the body over your tops, then they are probably too short regardless the fact whether you sit or stand.
- Shorts require wearing the short socks that are almost invisible.
- Don’t forget to switch the socks at least once a day
Sock faux pas can in fact ruin the whole impression from the nice outfit. In other cases socks can become a statement of individuality and style. But implementing the socks into outfit is not as hard as it may appear. Just keep in mind that invisible socks are ideal for creating the impression of being sockless.
Colorful or patterned socks should also present in your wardrobe since they are perfect for brining some creativity and individuality to the look. And finally, the socks in neutral and classic gamma like grey, black and dark brown should composite the base of your wardrobe, especially for the professional men.
Designers’ logos on clothes
It is believed that you get the quality you pay for and it is usually fair, especially in case with shoes and suits. Sure, any of us wouldn’t mind having designer’s garments in our wardrobes: nothing could be compared to the iconic Burberry trench coat or Fred Perry polo shirt, but the big style mistake is pursuing the loud brand names rather than the clothes itself.
Modesty is the new expression of luxury and style. Exposing the logos and labels to people around is not the best way of wearing the designer’s apparels. Brandishing is not able to immediately make you stylish and trendy. You will be surprised to find out that the polo shirt with the big Ralph Lauren horse won’t automatically ascribe you to the high society.
So, the solution would be keeping it simple- make up your wardrobe using the basic and discreet garments without the obvious signs of brands. Don’t focus on purchasing attires from the latest collections from the high end designers, but rather buy the clothes that has the perfect fit and that can be easily integrated into your existing wardrobe.
No doubts, money give you an opportunity to buy expensive clothes, but you cannot buy style. Therefore, rather than looking like a boaster by wearing all the expensive branded garments at once, make the clothes work for your style, but not other way around.
And remember, good sense of style is not something that is given to you with birth. It comes with some experience and learning the basic rules and skills that can transform you from the guy next door into a style icon.
