The new car year begins with the opening of the Detroit Auto Show 2012. Numerous new premiers will be on display from the ninth until the twenty second of January. The fireworks of innovations will be once again ignited on the big stage of this major North American Auto Show. The list below gives you an idea about some of the new concepts that should be expected the NAIAS 2012.
Ford Shelby GT 500
Those who love muscle, and American iron will celebrate the arrival of the new Ford Shelby GT 500. The radical model from the Mustang family is armed with a V8 5.8-liter engine. This means that the asphalt will be punished with 650hp, 320km/h, and 800Nm of torque. In order to achieve that power boost, most of the mechanics of the vehicle has been renovated. This includes a new compressor, new camshaft, new transmission shaft, a carbon fiber clutch and an improved dual-drive.
Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid
After the hybrid Volvo V60, now we see the Plug-in Hybrid concept embodied in the new Volvo XC60. Just because it has a diesel under the hood you should not think that this model is simply another incarnation of V60. The XC60 is powered by a plug-in hybrid gasoline engine assisted by an electric motor. The four cylinders provide 280hp and 380Nm at the front wheels. On the back we have the electric motor with 50kW and 200Nm of power across the rear wheels. Also another electric motor is provided in order to assist the gasoline engine, adding an extra 33kW and 150Nm of torque to the power of the vehicle. Thus the Plug-in Hybrid Volvo has a total of 350hp.
Toyota NS4 Plug-In Hybrid
The hybrid pioneer Toyota presents their NS4 model with a newly developed plug-in drive. It is sportier in appearance and far less conservative than recent Toyota concepts and production models (excluding the GT-86/Scion FR-S). NS4 shares the drivetrain technology with the hybrid version of the Toyota’s beloved Prius.
Toyota Prius C
Detroit will also see the arrival of the new Prius C. The four-meter-long five-seater was recently introduced in Japan with the name Aqua. The 1.5-liter gasoline engine is in conjunction with an electric motor and consumes only 2.8 liters per 100 kilometers. The Prius C will not be coming to Europe. For the Old Continent Toyota has prepared the slightly shorter Yaris hybrid, which will be coming in mid-June 2012. Its powertrain will be identical to the one used by Prius C.
Porche 911 Cabriolet
Porsche will boast with their new convertible prototype of 911 model arriving straight from Stuttgart. The German vehicle is equipped with 3.4-liter six-cylinder boxer engine having 350hp and a 3.8-liter boxer with 400hp. The transmission is automatic with double clutch PDK, but the customer can also choose the manual gearbox with seven speeds.
The Japanese division, once created by Toyota to compete with luxury cars, will also participate in NAIAS 2012 with a sports car that will set trends in the designs that will be used in upcoming models. We are talking about the Lexus LF-LC concept, a prototype that will debut for the first time on the Detroit Auto Show. The new Lexus LF-LC has a powerful hybrid drivetrain, which could be compared to the power of the LFA amazing supercar.
The Nissan is combining the traditional essence of the Pathfinder with a new style that seems much more dramatic and streamlined. The Japanese brand will keep the 4×4 qualities of the previous model while maintaining its ability to reach virtually anywhere. It is expected that the new Nissan Pathfinder arrives in dealerships in the fall of 2012.
2013 Cadillac ATS
The Cadillac ATS concept will undoubtedly be one of the biggest highlights of the Detroit Auto Show. The new sedan is the GM’s response to the ones produced by the German brands. Therefore it is designed to compete with the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4. Cadillac ATS will have a rear-wheel-drive powertrain option. The conservative style of the vehicle will make it more attractive on the market, which could even catapult the Cadillac sales outside the U.S.
2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
The Korean manufacturer will display the new Genesis Coupe 2013. The new front fascia of the Hyundai incorporates a large hexagonal grille opening, along with new Veloster-inspired headlamps. The Genesis Coupe models are available with two types of engines that have been heavily worked out in order to improve efficiency and power. The 3.8-liter V-6 has an output of 345hp and 400Nm of torque. While the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine produces the respectable 271hp and 375Nm of torque. Both engines are offered with the option of either six or eight-speed automatic transmissions.
Mercedes SL 2013
The new SL 2013 is also scheduled for presentation on the NAIAS 2012. Looking bold and aggressive, the model has a radical design, borrowing some style elements from the SLK. The Mercedes engineers have worked hard to try to reduce the weight of the new model, which is now about 140 kilos lighter than its predecessor. The aluminum-intensive body structure increases the torsional rigidity by 20 percent.
Under the hood, two engines are available. The entry-level 3.5-liter V6 outputs 302hp (225kW) and 370Nm (273lb-ft) of torque. It enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds while averaging 6.8 L/100km (34.5mpg US). If that doesn’t seem powerful enough, the SL500 has a twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 with 429hp (320kW) and 699Nm (516lb-ft) of torque. This lets the car run from 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.
Buick Encore 2013
The Buick brand, owned by General Motors, will unveil at the NAIAS their new 5-passenger midsize crossover Encore. The vehicle will ride on a modified version of the Sonic/Spark’s Gamma II platform architecture. The Encore will be equipped with GM’s latest 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline units, and with a choice of front- and all-wheel drive layouts.
Dodge Dart 2013
The Dart features an aggressive styling resembling the Charger. The vehicle is largely based on the European Alfa Romeo Giulietta. As for engines, the Dart relies on three different inline-fours. There will be a 2.0-liter, a turbocharged 1.4-liter Multiair, and a 2.4-liter Multiair. The naturally aspirated 2.0- and 2.4-liters are both members of Chrysler’s new engine family, called Tigershark. They both offer a direct injection and make 158 and 173hp, respectively. The turbo is the same as the unit found in Fiat 500 Abarth. We expect the 1.4-liter to produce about 170hp and deliver a better fuel economy than the other two engines. Some students might have been tested in this snap right over here way, but not all students
